Affirmation Homecoming Mums

Updated: Mar 25, 2023

If you're a homeschooler looking to add some Texas spirit to your homeschool week, why not try making your own homecoming mums? These fun, oversized corsages are a tradition in many Texas schools, and they're a great way to show off your school spirit.

Since we’ve been working on self affirmations at every cottage meeting this month, we decided to incorporate the fun Texas tradition with a FTC homeschool spin. The kids love to pull out their big list of adjectives to help describe who they are now and who they strive to be as they grow. We helped our children choose the ribbons they loved best and a flower for the top. Then, we passed around a big book of sticky letters to use on each ribbon. We enjoyed supporting them as they chose powerful words to celebrate the attributes that make them unique. After wearing them, many of the kids said they planned to hang them in their bedrooms to use when they need a reminder of their truth.

When it comes to promoting a growth mindset and celebrating authenticity, positive self-affirmations can be a powerful tool. We open and close every cottage day by creating a rhythm and repeating our affirmations as a group. They are used to build brain pathways that will help them navigate feelings in a healthy way throughout their lifespan. Affirmations are also a great tool for wiring our brains for resilience, confidence, and a lifetime of whole heartedness - which are some of the essential elements needed to live a life unbothered.

STEPS TO MAKING YOUR OWN MUM: To make your own mum, you'll need some basic supplies: a large chrysanthemum (the bigger, the better!), some ribbon, bells, and other decorations of your choice. You can find all of these supplies at your local craft store.

Start by pinning the mum to a piece of cardboard or foam board to make it easier to work with. Then, add your ribbon. You can use school colors, or mix and match to create a unique look. Braid the ribbon, or tie it in bows, and add bells or other decorations as you go.

Once you're happy with your ribbon, it's time to add some bling. You can use beads, charms, or even small toys to decorate your mum. Just make sure whatever you add is securely attached.

When your mum is complete, pin it to your shirt or jacket and show off your homeschool spirit! And don't forget to take lots of pictures to remember the occasion.

Making your own homecoming mum is a fun and creative way to add some Texas tradition to your homeschool week. So grab your supplies and get crafting!
