Small is Mighty: The Benefits of a Cottage Homeschool Co-op

Updated: Mar 26, 2023

Have you ever started a project with a big vision, only to find that sometimes smaller is better? That's what happened to us when we started planning a co-op. At first, we thought that a big co-op would be the way to go, but it turns out that finding families willing to invest their time and energy into teaching quality classes was harder than we anticipated. Plus, the weekly commitment just wasn't feasible for everyone.

Instead, we decided to start small with a cottage co-op. And you know what? We fell in love with it. Sometimes, quality beats quantity. We're excited to continue on this path and see where it takes us.

A homeschool co-op is a group of families who come together to share the responsibility of educating their children. Each family takes a turn teaching a subject or leading an activity, so the workload is spread out and everyone benefits from the expertise and experience of the other parents. A small cottage homeschool co-op takes this concept one step further by limiting the number of families involved. Typically, a small cottage co-op will have no more than 3-5 families, ensuring that everyone can form close relationships and feel comfortable collaborating.

In our Cottage School, homeschooling moms come together to create a smaller, more intimate learning environment where our children can flourish. Not only do our children benefit from personalized teaching, but they also build invaluable friendships with their peers, and we as parents find support and encouragement from one another.

So, why is a small cottage homeschool co-op a great way to educate your child? Here are just a few reasons:

1. Personalized Education

With a small cottage homeschool co-op, you have the opportunity to tailor your child's education to their specific needs and interests. Because the group is small, there is more flexibility to change things up and adjust lessons based on what is working best for each child.

2. Shared Responsibility

One of the biggest challenges of homeschooling is feeling like you have to do it all. With a small cottage homeschool co-op, you'll share the responsibility with other parents, which can take some of the pressure off.

3. Community Building

A small cottage homeschool co-op offers the opportunity to form close relationships with other families who are going through the same experience. You'll be part of a support system that will offer guidance, resources, and the camaraderie that comes from a shared goal of educating your children at home. Your child will also have the opportunity to make new friends, engage in group learning activities, and participate in field trips and other outings.

4. Cost-Effective

Homeschooling can be expensive, especially if you're purchasing curriculum and materials on your own. With a small cottage homeschool co-op, you can share the expense of materials and take advantage of group discounts, making homeschooling more affordable.

5. Fun and Engaging

Learning is always more fun when you're doing it with others. With a small cottage homeschool co-op, you'll have the opportunity to do group activities and projects, making learning more engaging and exciting for your child.

The best thing about a small homeschool co-op is the sense of community it creates. We all look forward to our cottage day where we share ideas, encourage one another, and learn together. It's amazing how the support of other like-minded homeschool families can make a huge difference in enabling us to continue this homeschool journey. Whether we're laughing, crying, or learning, we do it all together.
