Gameschooling has become a popular term in the homeschooling community, and for good reason. Using games to teach a variety of subjects can be a fun, engaging way for kids to learn. This semester, our cottage co-op decided to offer a gameschooling class for our students, and so far it has been a big hit.
This semester one of the 4 "classes" we are offering to our cottage co-op is gameschooling. Originally, we were going to do all kinds of games, but so far we have focused solely on geography games, puzzles and a couple of lessons. Our cottage kiddos have been eager to learn more about the world and playing games together has been a great way to learn. Their favorites have been The Scrambled States of America, The 50 States game and the puzzles. They have all gained quite a bit of geography knowledge in a fun way.
In addition to learning geography, our gameschooling time gives them time to read, do some math, work on critical thinking and social skills. Learning how to be a kind winner (or loser) of a game, how to wait your turn and how to communicate rules to other are all great skills to develop. We absolutely plan to continue to incorporate games into our co-op next semester.
