The Brown vs. Board of Education ruling was a landmark moment in American history. It declared that separate but equal facilities were unconstitutional, paving the way for integration in schools across the country. But what was it like to live through this time? We recently facilitated a panel discussion of people who grew up during this era, and it was so interesting to hear their stories. Special thank you to the Carver Branch Library in San Antonio for being such great hosts to our group!

Each guest on the panel grew up in a different city, and it was fascinating to hear how location played a role in their experiences. The panelists spoke about the challenges they faced, from discrimination to violence, and the courage it took to stand up for their rights.
But the panel wasn't just a discussion about the past – it also touched on the present and the future. The guests spoke about the progress that has been made, but also the work that still needs to be done. They discussed how to continue the fight for equality and the importance of speaking out against injustice.
One thing that really struck us during the panel was the power of personal stories. Hearing about the experiences of real people made the history come alive in a way that no textbook ever could. It reminded us that history isn't just a collection of facts and dates – it's the stories of millions of individual lives.
As we move forward and continue to fight for equality, it's important to remember the lessons of the past. The stories shared during the panel are a reminder that progress is possible, but only if we are willing to fight for it. We must continue to learn from the past, and use those lessons to shape a better future for all.
