About
This year, we are excited to participate in San Antonio’s Día de los Muertos Festival by creating an ofrenda (altar) that reflects both personal and social justice themes. We are asking For the Culture families to create a shoebox ofrenda honoring a loved one—someone special from your family or community who has passed away.
We are asking for a $5 donation per box to help cover some of the costs of creating and displaying the altar. You can pick up your shoebox on October 2nd between 10 AM and 2 PM or October 4th at the Latinx Heritage Month Presentation event. Each family will be given a plain black box and a paper photo frame to display a picture of the person you're honoring. You will be responsible for decorating the inside of the box with items that are meaningful to the person. These could include:
Small mementos or objects they loved.
Flowers, candles, or other decorative items.
Notes or poems written in their memory.
Anything that represents who they were and their significance to your family.
Please note that the outside of the box should remain undecorated to keep the display cohesive. All completed boxes must be delivered to us no later than October 23rd. The altar will be displayed at the Muertros Festival October 26-27th.
This is a beautiful opportunity for us to come together as a community and honor the lives of those we have lost while educating our children about cultural traditions and the importance of remembrance.
Here is some inspiration for your ofrenda. You will receive an email confirmation with more detailed instructions for creating your box ofrenda.
Thank you for your participation!
